A 56-year-old woman died after falling roughly 10 feet into an uncovered Con Edison manhole in Midtown Manhattan near Fifth Avenue and East 52nd Street. The fall occurred around 11:15 p.m. after she exited her parked vehicle and stepped into the exposed opening. City officials said a heavy multi-axle truck drove over the manhole about 12 minutes earlier, and no active construction was taking place at the intersection. The medical examiner ruled the death an accident and cited scald burns with inhalational thermal injury and blunt force trauma of the torso. Con Edison said surveillance video suggested the cover was likely displaced by the truck rather than intentionally removed.
