What we know about the federal immigration raid in Chinatown
""This chaos was created by these federal agents who seemingly wanted to start a fight," said Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition. "This was choreographed in the sense of them doing this to get New Yorkers to see that they're doing something, but they're not doing anything for our safety and security.""
"Lander said, "street vendors are not a national security threat," and called the federal response unjustified."
""We need to make sure that we are showing - in strength of numbers - that ICE is not welcome here in New York City," said Crystal Hudson, a councilmember from Brooklyn. "We need to do it loudly. We need to do it proudly and we will all stand beside one another ensuring that [Donald] Trump gets our message: ICE is not welcome here.""
Federal Homeland Security agents detained more than a dozen people during an immigration enforcement operation on Chinatown's Canal Street, including nine undocumented immigrants, four people accused of assaulting a federal officer and one person accused of obstructing law enforcement by blocking a driveway. Masked agents carried out arrests on a busy street frequented by vendors selling handbags and merchandise. Immigrant advocates said lawyers struggled to identify the detained. City officials said they had no involvement and reiterated noncooperation on civil deportations. Elected officials and advocates condemned the raid and called for public demonstrations against ICE presence in New York City.
