Zohran Mamdani assumed office with unconventional, highly public swearing-in events that began just after midnight during the Times Square ball drop and continued with a seven-block-long public celebration. The first oath took place on the steps of the landmark New York City Hall subway station and involved a historic Quran from the New York Public Library and a Quran belonging to his grandfather. Tens of thousands of supporters braved blistering cold to gather on New Year's Day as he repeated the oath on City Hall steps.
