An awning over a subway station entrance in Brooklyn Heights collapsed on Sunday morning without injuring anyone. The Hotel St. George's awning, which is over 100 years old, fell just after 7 a.m. Councilman Lincoln Restler noted the building is under the responsibility of Educational Housing Services (EHS), which has faced complaints regarding poor conditions. The Department of Buildings (DOB) indicated that the collapsed structure was poorly maintained, with corrosion evident on the steel beams and previous facade violations noted in 2021 and 2022. The MTA altered train schedules as investigations commenced.
The awning that collapsed was attached to the Hotel St. George, which is over 100 years old and sat above the Clark Street subway station. Surveillance footage captured the incident occurring just after 7 a.m., fortunately with no pedestrians underneath at that time.
Councilman Lincoln Restler stated that Educational Housing Services (EHS) is responsible for the building and addressed common complaints from locals about the conditions there, including issues related to sewage and filth.
