"With up to three casino licenses available downstate, two proposals in the New York City area have been met with strong community support, according to a recent report from CBS News. Earlier this week, community advisory councils in both Yonkers and Queens voted in favor of local casino proposals, the publication reported. In Yonkers, the community council unanimously supported a proposal to grant MGM's Yonkers Raceway and Empire City Casino a full casino license, the report says."
"On Monday, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton announced in a press release that she would be voting against the proposal, citing an overwhelmingly negative community reaction. "After taking part in two public hearings regarding this application, reading countless testimonies, and meeting with and hearing from my constituents about their thoughts, perspectives, and concerns regarding this application, I have decided to vote in opposition," said the Democrat who represents the North Shore and parts of Coney Island."
Up to three downstate casino licenses are available. Community advisory councils in Yonkers and Queens voted in favor of local casino proposals. Yonkers council unanimously supported granting MGM's Yonkers Raceway and Empire City Casino a full casino license, which would allow live dealer games beyond the current video gambling. Queens community members and elected officials backed expansion of Resorts World New York City racetrack and casino in South Ozone Park. Another Queens proposal near Citi Field awaits a community advisory council vote. Three proposed Manhattan casinos were recently voted down. A Coney Island proposal faces strong community opposition and an announced no vote from State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton.
