"Streetsblog provides high-quality journalism and analysis for free - which is something to be celebrated in an era of paywalls. Once a year, we ask for your tax-deductible donations to support our reporters and editors as they advance the movement to end car dependency in our communities. If you already support our work, thank you! If not, can we ask for your help? This year's fundraiser includes a special gift for our biggest supporters. Don't miss out."
"But we've also cheered the lawmaker in those fewer instances when he's been right on livable streets issues. Today, we're in the cheering section. A few days ago, we published a great story about the tens of thousands of drivers who are committing "garage fraud" by registering their cars out of state even though they clearly live in New York. That story gave a hat-tip to Holden, who has been working on this issue."
Streetsblog requests tax-deductible donations to support reporters and editors working to end car dependency and keep journalism free from paywalls. The fundraiser offers a special gift for top supporters and promotes goals of creating more livable, walkable, bikeable, equitable cities. Council Member Bob Holden and successor-elect Phil Wong urged NYPD and Finance Department to address large-scale garaging fraud, where drivers register cars out-of-state despite living in New York. They argued that such fraud burdens compliant drivers and raises insurance costs, and requested data analysis and identification of statutory, operational, or resource barriers to enforcement.
