Trump labeled Mamdani a "communist," predicted his candidacy would benefit the Republican Party, and claimed Mamdani would face unprecedented problems with Washington. Trump also criticized Gov. Kathy Hochul for endorsing Mamdani, calling the endorsement "rather shocking" and harmful for the city. Mamdani clinched the Democratic primary over Andrew Cuomo, who remains in the race as an independent. Mayor Eric Adams announced he will drop out after failing to gain sufficient support. Mamdani pushed back, saying Trump and billionaire donors will not dictate the election outcome.
