"A teenage boy who fell down a 50 foot shaft of the Queensboro Bridge in New York City on Monday, Feb. 16 was allegedly participating in a social media challenge, police say."
""This was a confined-space operation, which is a very difficult, time-consuming, manpower-intensive operation," FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado said at a press briefing. "It involved high-angle equipment, ropes, we have to monitor the air, and create high points.""
""Just mumbling from the severe trauma," FDNY firefighter Khalid Lee told CBS New York of the boy's condition. "The adrenaline that was felt, it was, it was moving, but this is what we train for.""
On Monday, Feb. 16, a 16-year-old boy fell down a 50-foot shaft of the Queensboro Bridge in New York City while allegedly participating in a social media challenge. FDNY firefighters responded around 9 p.m. after discovering a shoe and blood near an open hatch and located the fall. Using ropes, harnesses and high-angle equipment, crews conducted a confined-space, manpower-intensive rescue that required air monitoring and creation of high points. The operation involved about 75 first-responders and 10 pieces of equipment. The teen, believed to be from Lynbrook, N.Y., was rescued and transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell in stable but critical condition.
