""Super Speeders aren't just a threat to everyone traveling around New York City; they're also a threat to themselves," Ben Furnas, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, said."
""I'm grateful that this was the rare, empty MTA bus, and no one was injured when the bus hit a building.""
""require the installation of intelligent speed assistance devices if a driver accumulates eleven or more points on their driving record during 24 months, or receives 6 speed camera or red light camera tickets during a twelve month period.""
A 26-year-old driver driving a Honda Accord slammed into a westbound MTA bus near Bay Ridge Avenue and Ridge Boulevard at about 1:30 a.m., causing the bus to jump a curb and hit a building. The bus operator was not injured; the driver was transported to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn with minor injuries and is in stable condition. Transportation Alternatives reported the driver had 16 speed camera tickets and one red light camera ticket in 12 months and urged passage of the Stop Super Speeders Act. The Senate passed the bill in June but it has not reached the Assembly. Families for Safe Streets urged lawmakers to act.
