"The police commissioner stated that transit crime decreased by nearly 25% in November compared to the same period last year, a figure the NYPD disclosed at the MTA board's committee meetings on Monday. Furthermore, she said the last five months combined were the safest in subway history, excluding the pandemic years, when ridership was far lower than average. New Yorkers are safer on our subways now than they have been in years, Tisch said."
Subway crime in New York City has fallen to its lowest level in 16 years, accompanied by a $77 million commitment to sustain increased police presence through next year. Crime on the rails dropped nearly 15% since 2019, and 2025 is projected to be the second safest non-pandemic year on record behind 2009. Transit crime decreased nearly 25% in November compared with last year, and the combined last five months were the safest in subway history excluding pandemic years. The transit system saw a 5.2% crime decrease over the past 11 months versus the same period in 2024. State funding covered NYPD overtime to enable more officers to patrol the subways.
