"We were actually canvassing for another crime that happened nearby and while we were canvassing we noticed the smoke,"
"And from there, we tried to locate exactly where the smoke was coming from."
"So we were under the impression like, 'oh no, there's a dog trapped inside,' you know? So, I think me and Chris both had the same idea, made every effort, you know, gained access to the rear of the building, realized there was a glass door and that was probably the only way through, so, we decided to make entry through there,"
On Sunday, Aug. 10, Police Officer Christopher De Sciora and Officer Andy Guo were canvassing in Brooklyn's Quality of Life division when they noticed a plume of black smoke near Canal Avenue and West 36th Street. They located a home ablaze and found the front door locked while hearing a dog barking inside. The officers accessed the rear yard, hurdled a fence, and Guo broke a glass door with a baton while De Sciora cleared remaining glass with what appeared to be a shovel. They rescued the dog, Sherlock, and two brothers, with body-worn camera footage later released by the NYPD.
