'Smaller, more predictable': NJ Transit fares go up by 3% on Tuesday
Briefly

NJ Transit is implementing a 3% fare increase on trains, light rail, and buses, effective Tuesday. This follows a significant 15% increase a year prior, meant to address a nine-year freeze. Officials plan to apply a 3% annual increase every July moving forward, asserting that it helps meet non-discretionary cost needs. The fare adjustment is also supported by new large business taxes that aid budget balancing. The 1-zone bus fare will rise from $1.80 to $1.85, and trains from Penn Station to Union Station will now cost $8.50.
This allows us to continue to operate full service while making necessary improvements to the customer experience and maintaining the ability to respond to evolving needs.
According to the new fare guidelines, a single zone trip on the buses will increase from $1.80 to $1.85. On the commuter rails, the price for a one-way trip from Penn Station in New York to Union Station in New Jersey will increase from $8.30 to $8.50.
