Nicola Tanzi, a 64-year-old Italian immigrant and devout Catholic, was attacked inside the Jay Street-MetroTech subway station after holding an emergency door open for David Mazariegos. Mazariegos allegedly sucker-punched Tanzi twice, knocked him to the floor, and repeatedly stomped and kicked his head and face while Tanzi lay unconscious. Tanzi suffered skull fractures, a crushed nasal bone, and multiple facial injuries and died hours later. Mazariegos, who has five open criminal cases, told police he beat and robbed Tanzi and said he "took his spirit." He is charged with first-degree murder.
