Sharp-eyed NYC train operator saves young Brooklyn subway surfers' lives
""Something told me to just pop my head out the window and take a look back," Outieral told The News. "As I did that, I saw them climbing down between the cars [onto the tracks]," he said of the kids. "Had I moved, it would have been a different story.""
""You try and make as smooth and controlled a stop as you can," he said. "We weren't going too fast at that moment.""
""You say you've got an angel, or a gut instinct, or whatever you want to call it," the train operator mused. "My guardian angel was looking out for me and those kids today.""
Anthony Outieral, a Brooklyn subway train operator, noticed four or five youths boarding a Manhattan-bound F train at Kings Highway in Midwood around 1:50 p.m. The conductor reported the youths riding on top of the cars, prompting the operator to stop the train and contact the MTA rail control center. The youths climbed back into the car and the conductor spoke with them; rail control cleared the operator to proceed. Before moving, the operator looked back and saw the youths climbing down between the cars onto the tracks, and the train remained stopped, preventing them from being dragged. The youths fled the platform. The incident occurred about an hour after a 13-year-old was caught attempting to subway-surf nearby.
