Sanitation Commissioner to discuss NYC trash bins at Staten Island meeting
"Lojan will address the community at the Gerard Carter Center on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event, which is sponsored by Bay Street & Beyond, will focus on the city's ongoing trash containerization program. Residents will be able to ask questions and hear directly from leadership about how the program will impact their communities and improve public spaces."
"New York City began piloting containerized waste collection in select neighborhoods in 2023, starting with high-density areas and expanding to residential zones. The initiative was informed by successful models in cities like Barcelona and Paris. The city's trash containerization rules require bins for residential buildings of fewer than 10 units that are 55 gallons or smaller with secure lids. The city is also offering official bins which come with latching lids, wheels, and a metal bar for mechanized collection."
Staten Island residents can hear Department of Sanitation leadership about New York City's trash containerization initiative at a community session on Sept. 30, 2025, at the Gerard Carter Center. The program replaces loose black bags with secured bins to reduce litter, cut rat populations, and improve neighborhood quality of life. Pilots began in 2023 in high-density areas and were informed by models from Barcelona and Paris. Rules require 55-gallon-or-smaller secure-lidded bins for residential buildings with fewer than ten units. The city offers official wheeled bins with latching lids and a metal bar for mechanized collection; mandatory rollout is set for June 2026.
