"For the judge to say that he committed misdemeanor assault on me, that is a repugnant verdict. It absolutely shouldn't have been allowed. It should have been felony assault on me."

Shaborn Banks was sentenced to 50 hours of community service for third-degree assault related to an attack on Lt. Richard Mack during a July 15, 2020 Brooklyn Bridge Black Lives Matter demonstration. Banks avoided prison after being found not guilty of more serious felony counts and a misdemeanor weapon charge earlier in the year. Lt. Mack sustained injuries that ended his 26-year career and denounced the misdemeanor verdict as repugnant, saying misdemeanor assault on a police officer should not exist. Banks' defense said he struck Mack after being hit first. Two other defendants received harsher punishments.
