"This is a case of if you build it they will come, and not just the tourists during the warm weather,"
"We could be in a situation where all it takes is a bigger boat, and not substantial infrastructure investment, in which case it should move forward,"
"I don't want to see beach erosion, I don't want to see environmental issues, and I don't want to see overdevelopment,"
"Taking the long train with delays into Manhattan, and then back into Brooklyn - I'd rather take a ferry. I like a boat ride,"
Plans to add ferry access at Coney Island have resumed after a 2022 attempt at Kaiser Park failed. The NYC Economic Development Corporation is deploying a buoy off the Steeplechase Pier to measure whether the site can support a ferry terminal and to estimate activation costs. Council Member Justin Brannan advanced a bill to pursue the effort and cited rising ridership on the Bay Ridge Ferry as justification. Brannan said minimal infrastructure may be required and that a larger vessel might suffice. Some local business owners express concern about erosion, environmental impacts, and overdevelopment. Study data is expected within six months.
