Mario's Meats and Gourmet Deli in Middle Village created The Curtis Sliwa Hero as the restaurant's sandwich of the month and named it for Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa. The sandwich features grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella and arugula with spicy calabrese chili on fresh ciabatta and is priced at $16. Sliwa visited the deli to try the sandwich, called the naming an honor and a New York salute, and said the visit recalled his time working in his uncle's butcher shop. Deli owner Joe DiGangi said Sliwa was the only real New Yorker in the race.
