Park Avenue Viaduct reaches key milestone in reconstruction work for Metro-North
"For the last 100 years, it's been falling apart, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said. This is a story about what we're dealing with in the MTA capital program. In this viaduct, there are structural elements that were put there, maybe by Cornelius Vanderbilt himself, back in the 1890s. The viaduct, also known as a bridge with multiple spans, is considered the backbone of the Metro-North Railroad."
"The $590 million Phase 1, scheduled for completion next year, is the first of two phases to reconstruct or replace portions of the 132-year-old viaduct in East Harlem that carries Metro-North commuter trains. Improvements so far include the replacement of 128 bridge spans that connect tracks, column to column; the addition of 12,800 feet of new aluminum third-rail; and the addition of 6,500 feet of signal cables, 25,000 feet of new running rail, and over 40,000 feet of new communication cables."
On October 6, 2025 Phase 1 bridge replacement work on the Park Avenue Viaduct reached completion of its bridge installations. Phase 1 is a $590 million effort that began in 2023 and is scheduled for overall completion next year, and it rebuilds or replaces portions of the 132-year-old elevated steel viaduct in East Harlem. The work installed 128 bridge spans and replaced 8,240 track feet without disrupting Metro‑North service. Additional upgrades include 12,800 feet of aluminum third-rail, 6,500 feet of signal cable, 25,000 feet of running rail, and over 40,000 feet of communication cable. The structure runs nearly two miles and carries about 750 trains on a typical weekday.
