Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi that New York City does not need the National Guard, citing recent lower crime numbers. Tisch met Bondi at One Police Plaza for about 30 minutes and said the NYPD had crime under control. Overall shootings and shooting victims have dropped to all-time lows so far this year. President Donald Trump said he was considering federal action in several cities, including New York, Baltimore, Oakland and Chicago. Mayor Eric Adams also said New York does not need the National Guard, called the city the safest big city in America, and invited federal partnership on gun and mental-health laws. No deployment plans exist.
We have other cities that are very bad. New York is a problem. And then you have, of course, Baltimore and Oakland. We don't even mention that anymore. They're so far gone, I will look at New York in a little while. Let's do this. Let's do this together, And if we need to, we'll do the same thing in Chicago. We have an incompetent governor there.
This is the safest big city in America, and we've seen the [crime] numbers continue to decrease, If the federal government wants to partner with us to go after some real laws to stop dangerous people from having guns, those with mental health issues getting access to guns, we look forward to having that coordination in that manner.
