NYPD Harbor Unit officers on a routine ice-flow training spotted an injured bald eagle stranded on a slab of ice in the Hudson River. The team used a long catcher pole to subdue the bird's wings while Sergeant Amello approached from behind to limit stress. The bird appeared to be bleeding in multiple areas and emitted distress calls, requiring all four officers to assist despite risks from sharp talons and a powerful beak. The officers brought the eagle aboard, transported it to The Raptor Trust Sanctuary in New Jersey, and reported it in stable condition.
