New York City's car-free summer streets program is expanding, closing over 22 miles of roadways for five consecutive Saturdays this summer. The closures will begin in Queens and Staten Island and will introduce a continuous car-free route along Manhattan for the first time. Events include free run-and-walks, group bike rides, and public art installations. Lyft will offer free Citi Bike day passes. The schedule includes closures across multiple boroughs, starting July 26 and culminating with Brooklyn and Bronx events on August 23.
Summer Streets reimagines our public space as a shared resource, turning city streets into corridors of movement, culture and creativity, said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.
For five consecutive Saturdays starting this weekend, the city will ban cars from more than 22 miles of total roadway across the five boroughs, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This year, free activities include run-and-walk events sponsored by New York Road Runners, group bike rides from one end of Manhattan to the other, and interactive public art installations.
For the first time, a car-less stretch will run uninterrupted along the length of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood, marking a significant expansion in the program.
