"Furthermore, officials reported that the subways have experienced a 5.5% decrease in major crime over the past 11 months, between January and November, compared to the same time last year. The system saw 113 fewer major crimes over the 11-month span a drop from 2,050 in 2024 to 1,937 in 2025. The decrease included five fewer murders aboard the rail system this year, compared to last, according to NYPD data (nine in 2024 vs. four in 2025)."
NYPD and MTA data show a 24% year-over-year decline in the six major subway crime categories in November, with 168 major crimes versus 222 in 2024. Robberies fell 18%, felony assaults 30%, and grand larcenies 24%. Across January–November, major crimes decreased 5.5%, dropping from 2,050 in 2024 to 1,937 in 2025, a reduction of 113 incidents. Murders aboard the rail system decreased from nine to four. Rapes increased from five to nine, an 80% rise. Grand larcenies remain the largest category of victimization and are defined as high-value thefts without force.
