NYC public school staffer skimmed $415K in tax dollars for her private cheerleading team: DA
"Instead of purchasing necessary educational materials to help students thrive, the defendant is accused of stealing school funds for her own private cheerleading company,"
""Theft of public funds intended for our students is a serious breach of trust," Katz said."
""My office will hold accountable anyone who violates that trust and undermines the integrity of our public education system.""
""Abi Corbin's actions, as alleged, were a brazen abuse of her official position and a clear violation of the public trust," said Anastasia Coleman, the school system's special commissioner of investigations."
Abi Corbin, 53, worked as a community associate at the East-West School of International Studies, PS 281 in Flushing. Corbin allegedly ran a scheme from July 2021 through July 2024 to divert $415,000 in taxpayer money meant for students into her private company, Queens Campus Cheer. As part of her duties she processed work orders to purchase materials; the school does not have a cheerleading team. Corbin allegedly used the principal's login and signature to order cheerleading merchandise. Delivery of boxes to the school on July 31, 2024 prompted an investigation and led to grand larceny and identity theft charges; Corbin surrendered and was released without bail pending a December court date.
