NYC public beaches open for swimming Memorial Day weekend
NYC public beaches opened for swimming despite rainy Memorial Day weather, with lifeguards on duty. All 14 miles of city-run beaches across the five boroughs are free and open to the public through September 13. Beach locations include Cedar Grove Beach, Coney Island and Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Midland Beach and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk, Orchard Beach and Promenade, Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk, South Beach, and Wolfe’s Pond Beach. Officials emphasized water safety after a 17-year-old swimmer went missing off Rockaway Beach. Swimmers are urged to enter the water only when lifeguards are present daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Color-coded signs indicate green for open, yellow for advisory, and red for closed. Outdoor public pools open June 27.
"Color-coded signs displayed at each beach will also indicate its status: Green: Open with swimming and wading permitted. Yellow: Advisory with swimming and wading permitted, but not recommended. Red: Closed with swimming and wading not permitted."
