January 2026 recorded the lowest levels of gun violence in New York City history, including the fewest shootings, shooting victims, and murders. The city logged 40 shootings and 47 shooting victims, below prior lows of 50 shootings and 56 victims. Murders fell to the lowest January total on record, breaking the previous record of 22; Manhattan and Staten Island reported zero homicides. The NYPD credited the Winter Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed up to 1,800 officers on nightly foot posts across 64 zones in 33 precincts, public housing, and the subway. Major crime dropped nearly 7% year-over-year in January.
