"The threat of "significant coastal flooding" will extend from the Battery in Manhattan down south, impacting communities along east-facing beaches, especially those in New Jersey. "It's going to be a very prolonged event, hours and hours and hours, multiple high tide cycles of this wind coming out of the east or northeast just pounding on the coastline, so we do expect major flooding, especially in New Jersey," DaSilva shared."
"The cluster of showers and thunderstorms is expected to begin forming into this larger storm Friday evening. From there, DaSilva explained the storm will slowly progress up the East Coast and generate strength as it does so. While some precipitation is forecast to fall over the city on Saturday, that is from a separate energy mass coming down from Canada. The coastal storm is expected to impact the city midday Sunday, perhaps sometime in the late morning, according to DaSilva."
"Along these east-facing beaches, particularly in New Jersey, DaSilva foresees a storm surge of 1-3 feet, with some areas potentially experiencing worse conditions. In one report, AccuWeather claims the storm surge from this system "could rival that of Sandy in some areas, especially in locations in the mid-Atlantic that were spared in the 2012 storm." The storm has already prompted the cancellation of Sunday's Staten Island half marathon."
Coastal neighborhoods near New York City and New Jersey face a high risk of coastal flooding and storm surge this weekend. Prolonged east to northeast winds will produce multiple high-tide cycles pounding the coastline, increasing flood risk especially along east-facing beaches and from the Battery in Manhattan southward. AccuWeather projects storm surge of 1–3 feet in many areas, with some locations possibly worse and surge that could rival Sandy in certain mid-Atlantic spots. The system is forming Friday evening, with some separate precipitation Saturday, and the coastal storm expected to impact the city midday Sunday. Events, including a Staten Island half marathon, have already been canceled.
