The Empire Bins, measuring 3-feet wide and 5-feet tall, represent New York City’s strategy to combat rats and improve urban cleanliness. After a $4 million study recommended moving from traditional trash bags to bins, the city implemented new regulations for waste disposal. Instead of black trash bags, residents and businesses must now use city-sanctioned bins. The bins are designed for functionality but also to blend into the environment, with a goal of making them an unnoticed part of the streetscape. Currently, 1,100 bins are deployed across the Harlem pilot area.
The Empire Bins, standing 3-feet wide and 5-feet tall with gently curved lids, aim to minimize visible waste and enhance the streetscape in New York City.
Inspired by a $4 million study, New York City initiated a shift from trash bags to designated bins to combat rat problems and maintain cleanliness in the urban environment.
