"David Mazariegos, 25, was arrested in Times Square and charged with murder, robbery and grand larceny. Mazariegos was arrested 17 times previously, including on a robbery charge, according to NewsNation local affiliate PIX11. Per WABC, Mazariegos told police he beat Tanzi and stomped on his head multiple times because he didn't like the way the victim was looking at him. "@GovKathyHochul has blood on her hands," Department of Transit Secretary Sean Duffy said on X Thursday."
""Nicola Tanzi's life was taken by another repeat offender roaming New York's streets freely. New York needs leaders who will back the blue and make America's transit system safe again," he added. Mazariegos reportedly had four of the victim's credit cards on his person at the time of his arrest. Police added he also had a katana stretching more than 20 inches long with him."
"WABC reported Tanzi was an usher at St. Athanasius-St. Dominic Parish in Brooklyn and an immigrant from Italy. "He was a man of faith and he was a man who was welcoming to others ... that was his role at church and he made sure everyone felt welcome at the church and everyone understood they had a place at the church," a pastor at the church told the outlet."
On Tuesday, Nicola Tanzi, 64, was beaten and stabbed at the Jay Street-Metrotech subway station in downtown Brooklyn and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police arrested 25-year-old David Mazariegos in Times Square and charged him with murder, robbery and grand larceny. Authorities said Mazariegos had been arrested 17 times previously and told police he beat and stomped on Tanzi because he disliked how the victim looked at him.
