New Poll Shows Mamdani Dominating the Mayoral Race - But With a Catch
"The latest poll of New York City's mayoral race shows that Democrat Zohran Mamdani is destroying the competition in a four-way race against former governor Andrew Cuomo, current mayor Eric Adams, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo and Adams are both running as independents. The Siena Institute poll, published Tuesday morning, found that 46 percent of likely voters would choose Mamdani, followed by 24 percent who would vote for Cuomo. Sliwa was preferred by 15 percent, and 9 percent chose the scandal-plagued Adams."
"Those results are fairly similar to the last Siena poll from August, which showed Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist State Assembly member, leading the field with 44 percent. But the new survey does confirm a theory held by President Donald Trump and other billionaires who want to stop Mamdani from becoming mayor and believe that narrowing the race is essential to that goal. If Adams and Sliwa dropped out of the race, the poll shows, their support would largely consolidate behind Cuomo. A two-man race would result in 48 percent for Mamdani versus 44 percent for Cuomo."
"In recent weeks, President Trump has reportedly been offering both Adams and Sliwa cushy jobs within the administration in pursuit of slimming down the field for Cuomo, and this poll could serve as a proof of concept for those efforts. But it may not be so easy to get a politician like Adams to walk away. Last week, Eric Adams called Andrew Cuomo a "snake and a liar" in a wild press conference, during which he said he would not step down from the race. And Sliwa has said he has no interest in quitting, despite pressure coming from Trump associates to do so."
The Siena Institute poll found Zohran Mamdani leading New York City's mayoral race with 46 percent of likely voters, followed by Andrew Cuomo at 24 percent, Curtis Sliwa at 15 percent, and Eric Adams at 9 percent. The numbers closely mirror an August poll that had Mamdani at 44 percent. Poll scenarios show that if Adams and Sliwa withdraw, their voters would largely consolidate behind Cuomo, producing a two-way result of 48 percent for Mamdani and 44 percent for Cuomo. Donald Trump and allies have reportedly tried to encourage Adams and Sliwa to exit; both have resisted.
