"Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed cutting $22 million from the NYPD budget during his fiscal year 2027 preliminary budget."
""When we took office, we inherited a historic budget gap," said Mayor Mamdani."
"In addition to cutting funding from the NYPD, he has also announced the canceling of phased hiring of 5,000 new police officers that the Adam's administration secured funding for back in October 2025."
""That's sending bad messages they can't try to balance budgets on the backs of police officers and retirees," said Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association."
Mayor Zohran Mamdani proposed cutting $22 million from the NYPD budget in the fiscal year 2027 preliminary budget. He canceled the phased hiring of 5,000 new police officers for which funding had been secured in October 2025. The mayor faces a $5.4 billion deficit to close over the next two years. The cancellation reverses a hiring plan advanced under the previous administration and reallocates resources to address the budget shortfall. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, criticized the move as sending a bad message and warned against balancing budgets at the expense of officers and retirees.
