"Every time when I walk into a subway station, I feel a faster breathing and my heart beats faster and my hands are shivering."
"It was as if that (attack) or moment would happen again."
"It was like we were prisoned in the invisible cage of the shadow of the (attack)."
"My apologies run deeper than the ocean for how sorry I am to this poor innocent person."
Wan Xu, a 36-year-old married mother, was shoved from behind onto the Chambers Street subway tracks on Aug. 29, 2023, and suffered a fractured left leg with ongoing complications. The attacker, 41-year-old Samuel Junker, who battles schizoaffective disorder, pleaded guilty and received a ten-year prison sentence from Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Laura Ward. Xu reports persistent psychological trauma, describing rapid breathing, shaking, and an "invisible cage" of fear that affects her and her husband at home and in public. Prosecutors sought a 12-year term and characterized the assault as the "nightmare of many New Yorkers."
