MAMDANI'S FIRST 100 DAYS: Free childcare for two thousand two-year-olds coming to priority neighborhoods this fall | amNewYork
"Two thousand New York City toddlers will receive free full-day child care this fall under the first phase of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's 2K rollout, with seats concentrated in neighborhoods he says have the greatest economic need and child care gaps. The expansion, announced Tuesday alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul, will bring more than 2,000 free seats to four school districts across Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens."
"All that is required to apply is that parents live within that school district, regardless of their income, occupation, or immigration status, Mamdani said. The application process will open sometime in early summer, he added. The mayor said the phase one districts were selected based on economic need, projected demand, existing access gaps, provider capacity, and readiness to launch."
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the first phase of his 2K child care expansion program on day 62 of his term, in partnership with Governor Kathy Hochul. The initiative will provide free full-day child care seats to over 2,000 toddlers across four school districts in economically disadvantaged areas. Phase one targets School District 6 in Upper Manhattan, School District 10 in the Bronx, School Districts 18 and 23 in Brooklyn, and School District 27 in Queens. Eligibility requires only that parents reside within the designated school district, with no income, occupation, or immigration status restrictions. The application process opens in early summer, with services beginning in fall. Selection criteria included economic need, projected demand, existing access gaps, provider capacity, and implementation readiness.
