Last month was the safest July in NYC subway history, MTA says
Briefly

In July, subway crime decreased by 8% compared to the previous year, the lowest level recorded for that month since 1995. Statistics indicate significant reductions in robberies (down 16.7%), felony assaults (down 9.3%), and grand larcenies (down 6%). The MTA attributes these decreases to targeted actions, such as enhanced overnight patrols, the installation of additional security cameras, and mental health outreach efforts. Despite these improvements, fare evasion remains a problem, costing the MTA approximately $800 million annually in lost revenue.
Subway crime dropped 8% last month compared to the same period in 2024, making it the lowest level for any July since 1995, MTA officials said.
NYPD statistics show robberies are down 16.7%, felony assaults down 9.3%, and grand larcenies down 6%, the MTA reported on Aug. 10.
The MTA credits the crime dips to increased overnight patrols, more security cameras, and additional mental health outreach in the subway system.
Despite the reduction in crime, fare evasion costs the MTA up to $800 million yearly in foregone revenue.
