Waymo deployed eight self-driving cars for a safety test on Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn streets through September. Each vehicle drives itself but carries a trained AV-specialist behind the wheel at all times, and no passengers will be picked up during the trial. The city Department of Transportation and the state Department of Motor Vehicles approved the testing. City rules prohibit operating autonomous taxis, and New York State law forbids operating autonomous vehicles without a driver. Waymo is lobbying state lawmakers to lift driver requirements, with bills introduced in both the Assembly and the State Senate. Waymo previously began mapping Lower Manhattan in 2021.
We're a tech-friendly administration and we're always looking for innovative ways to safely move our city forward,
We know this testing is only the first step in moving our city further into the 21st century. As we continue to implement responsible innovation, we will always prioritize street safety.
