Ashley Marrero founded Kente Cones, an Afro-American–inspired ice cream shop that opened a brick-and-mortar location in East New York on Juneteenth. The shop offers educational food experiences and ice cream made with handmade, natural ingredients with many sourced from Africa. Kente Cones began in 2022 vending at pop-up events across Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, and built crucial connections at a Fort Greene food market. Growth paused briefly in 2023 after Marrero had a baby, while a business partner maintained bookings. With assistance from Assembly Member Nikki Lucas, the business secured a permanent storefront and quickly became a neighborhood safe space and local draw.
