Heavy smoke leaves 18 injured in Washington Heights subway after train strikes object | amNewYork
Briefly

On February 25, 2023, service on the 1 train in Washington Heights was suspended following an incident at the 191st Street station where dense smoke poured in after a train struck debris near the third rail. Eighteen individuals suffered smoke-related injuries and required medical attention, with many being evaluated on-site or taken to nearby hospitals; fortunately, all are expected to survive. Emergency services responded rapidly, with a significant number of firefighters and EMS personnel attending the scene. The cause remains under investigation, but authorities suspect the train's contact with debris sparked the smoke.
I believe there was some damage to the tracks, Assistant Chief Michael Woods said. The train entered the station, made some kind of contact that then hit the third rail, creating sparks.
Authorities say 12 units and some 60 fire and EMS personnel responded to the incident, finding at least 18 people in need of medical treatment due to smoke inhalation.
