"This was a confined-space operation, which is a very difficult, time-consuming, manpower-intensive operation,"
"It involves high-angle equipment, ropes, we have to monitor the air, and create high points."
"The adrenaline that was felt, it was moving. But this is what we train for,"
"Once I saw the shoe and the blood, I just relayed that information to the rest of the members on the scene so we could all get the ball rolling on what we were going to use to retrieve this victim once we laid eyes on him."
A 16-year-old Long Island boy plunged about 50 feet into a shaft on the Queensboro Bridge while attempting a TikTok stunt and became trapped for around four hours. More than 70 firefighters and first responders responded, deploying ten pieces of apparatus to execute a confined-space, high-angle rescue. Rescuers used ropes, monitored air quality, and created high points to lift the boy from the shaft. Personnel found a shoe and blood at the scene. A rescuer described strong adrenaline and relay of observations to organize the retrieval. The teen is hospitalized and recovering. TikTok faces criticism over dangerous stunts.
