Grandmother is NYC's first lithium-ion battery fire fatality of 2025 after Flushing pizzeria blaze: FDNY QNS
Briefly

A lithium-ion battery explosion from an e-bike ignited a two-alarm fire at Singa's Famous Pizza in Flushing on the Fourth of July, resulting in the death of a 76-year-old grandmother. She became trapped in the bathroom while fleeing the flames and was later rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries. Firefighters managed to evacuate five other individuals from the establishment. The FDNY warned about the dangers of battery fires and urged precautions against indoor storage of e-bikes.
A 76-year-old grandmother in Flushing became New York City's first victim this year to die in a fire caused by an exploding lithium-ion battery, FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker announced Tuesday.
The victim was having a late lunch at Singa's Famous Pizza when she went to the bathroom and became trapped inside when an e-bike that was charging erupted into a wall of flame.
FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Dan Quinn implored delivery workers to never store e-bikes indoors and never block any exits because it is a matter of life and death.
These fires are treacherous. They move very quickly. They are very hot, and you know, you don't have many feet to move before you're overtaken by the fumes and the smoke and the flames.
