
"Ottley was first elected to Brooklyn Civil Court in 2008, and was appointed the supervising judge of that court in 2010, becoming the first Black judge to hold the post. Before joining the Appellate Term, Ottley heard guardianship matters, and presided over jury and bench trials. Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Lisa Ottley and Christina Ryba as additional justices to New York's Appellate Division on Jan. 16, expanding court capacity under constitutional authority to address increased workload. Ottley joins the Second Department in Brooklyn and has served on the Appellate Term since 2023; she was first elected to Brooklyn Civil Court in 2008, became supervising judge in 2010, handled guardianship matters, and presided over jury and bench trials. Ryba joins the Third Department in Albany and became the first Black person elected to the state Supreme Court in the Third Department in 2015; she now becomes the first Black justice from that department to serve on the Appellate Division. Hochul cited their legal expertise, judicial temperament and commitment to justice.
