Mamdani said he apologized for his language and told officers he wants to work with them to deliver public safety, noting officers are now asked to address serious crime as well as mental health and homelessness. MacCallum insisted officers desired a broad public apology, and Mamdani apologized publicly on air, acknowledging NYPD officers put their lives on the line. Former mayor Andrew Cuomo criticized Mamdani for prior statements supporting defunding and dismantling the police.
