Exclusive: Coney Island residents without access to benches, playground, and more in their own backyard
Briefly

Residents at the NYCHA Carey Gardens building are frustrated by ongoing construction that blocks access to their backyards and playgrounds. Only two benches are available, as new fencing and scaffolding have limited residents' ability to gather and enjoy outdoor spaces. Fe Figueroa expressed concern over the impact on community interaction, stating residents can no longer play games or have meals together. NYCHA has indicated the closures are temporary for safety during construction, with plans for repairs expected to be completed by year's end.
"That scaffolding we didn't have a problem because it wasn't fenced, but this one is terrible," said Figueroa.
"They play Domino, they have their lunch there at the little tables and everybody will have fun. But now they're homebound because they can't go there," said Figueroa.
"This is abuse, this is abuse because we have a lot of children that live here. This is a playground where children come after school. They hang out with their parents," said Figueroa.
NYCHA sent News 12 a statement: "New shedding has now been installed by another vendor for required Local Law 11 facade repair work, which is currently estimated to be completed before the end of the year."
