
Eleven percent of New Yorkers do not have air conditioners at home, and 15% never or seldom use them. The main reasons for not owning or using air conditioning are electricity bills and conserving electricity. Summer cooling costs in New York City have risen by more than 50% over the last decade. Some residents choose to endure heat without home air conditioning by relying on fans, cold showers, and spending time in air-conditioned public places. One example is a Queens resident living in an Astoria walk-up apartment without AC, using multiple fans, chilled towels, ice with a fan, ice pops, and cold showers to manage temperatures during hot months.
