The MTA plans to install barriers on more than 150 subway platforms by 2025 to enhance safety and reduce unauthorized access to the tracks. Currently, 56 platforms have barriers, with over 100 more slated for completion by the end of the year. The added barriers aim to prevent people from falling onto the tracks and enhance security, supported by a recent customer survey indicating improved feelings of safety among passengers. Additional efforts include increasing LED lighting and equipping subway cars with security cameras.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated, "New Yorkers' safety will always be my number one priority, and customers need to both feel and be secure every time they ride the subway."
The MTA's commitment to enhancing safety includes installing barriers to prevent unauthorized track entry, with 56 platforms already equipped and 100 more expected by year's end.
