Democrat Zohran Mamdani announces transition leaders, vows to deliver on ambitious agenda after winning New York mayoral race

He will become the city’s first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian heritage, first born in Africa, and the youngest mayor in more than a century. He named a transition team including Elana Leopold, Grace Bonilla, Melanie Hartzog, Lina Khan, and Maria Torres-Springer. Campaign promises include free child care, free city bus service, city-run grocery stores, and a new Department of Community Safety. He faces bureaucratic hurdles, staffing challenges, and a hostile Trump administration threatening federal funding cuts.
