Babatunde Akowe, born in Crown Heights, served as a Justice of the New York City Civil Court in Kings County's 2nd Municipal District and died unexpectedly after beginning a ten-year term in January 2024 following his November 2023 election. He graduated from Lincoln University, Temple University, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law and was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. His career included roles at the Brooklyn DA's Office, the NY State Unified Court System, NYC Council, Department of Corrections, NYC Employees' Retirement System, the Governor's Office, and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. He served on Community Board 3 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
