A Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker, Marshalee Reid, was assaulted while helping an elderly passenger in Brooklyn. The attack occurred when two women attempted to enter the station without paying their fare. One of the assailants used keys and a pocket knife during the assault, leaving Reid with severe injuries. Union leaders noted that the assailants had a child with them. NYC Transit President Crichlow condemned the attack and criticized fare evasion as a precursor to violence. Reid expressed a strong desire for the suspects to be caught and faces ongoing fears regarding her safety and wellbeing.
'I was attacked by two girls while I was on the job. They jumped me. They assaulted me,' Reid said. 'They're fare beaters. They wanted a ride.'
NYC Transit President Crichlow called the attack 'outrageous.' He referred to it as another example of how fare evaders are often the perpetrators of assaults.
