Brooklyn man sentenced for 2022 shooting that struck 3-year-old girl leaving daycare
"According to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who cited evidence in the case, Habersham was a member of CHOO, a Brownsville-based gang, and was actually charged as part of a 2022 takedown that focused on that gang, and its rival, WOOO. According to Gonzalez, the gangs were linked to dozens of shootings in Brooklyn, including some that ended with deaths and innocent bystanders hurt."
"The sentencing was in connection to an incident that took place on March 25, 2022, at around 6 p.m., when Habersham got out of a BMW on Riverdale Avenue near Amboy Street in Brownsville and opened fire in the direction of a man putting child into a car, this after mistakenly believing that the man was a member of rival WOOO gang, according to Gonzalez. Instead, Habersham struck a three-year-old girl -- who just left daycare -- walking nearby with her father. The toddler was struck in the shoulder and was rushed to Brookdale Hospital. She survived."
"The next day, Habersham sent a screenshot of a news report of the shooting to a private social media group with the message "did bad." "When violent gang members treat our streets like shooting galleries, innocent families pay the price," Gonzalez said. "This defendant nearly killed a precious three-year-old on her way home from daycare.""
Habersham, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder on June 11 and received a 15-year prison sentence for a March 25, 2022 shooting in Brownsville. Evidence showed Habersham was a CHOO gang member and part of a 2022 takedown targeting CHOO and rival WOOO, gangs linked to dozens of shootings. Habersham exited a BMW and fired toward a man he mistakenly believed was a rival, striking a three-year-old girl leaving daycare; the toddler was hit in the shoulder, rushed to Brookdale Hospital, and survived. Habersham later shared a news screenshot with the message "did bad."
