Brooklyn Is Getting A Radical New Black-Owned Bar - Thanks To Nikole Hannah-Jones
""I'm very plugged into the writer community, I'm friends with a lot of great writers, and wanted to be able to bring those writers into our community," she said. "Whenever you have big book events in the city, they're not at Black bookstores and they're not in Black neighborhoods, so I really wanted to bring that to Bed-Stuy. People should expect all of their writing heroes.""
""According to the website, Black-owned spirits will be featured, and together, Black writers and creatives will gather to 'READ. DRINK. PLOT.'""
Nikole Hannah-Jones is opening The North Star + Bar, a Black-owned literary salon, bookstore, bourbon bar, and cafe in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, slated to open next year. The venue will host writing workshops, book clubs, author talks, and performances while featuring Black-owned spirits and serving as a cultural gathering place for Black writers and creatives under the motto READ. DRINK. PLOT. Partners include Rotimi and Ayo Akinnuoye of Bed-Vyne Wine & Spirits and DJ Johnson of Baldwin & Co. The space will occupy 339 Macon Street, the former Macon Hardware, which closed in 2023 after decades as a long-standing Black-owned business run by Peter and Clara Hayes.
