"Mayor Mamdani called the extension proposal "an interesting idea" that his administration is "digging into right now.""
"The agency also notes that the Crosstown Line is in the middle of a signal modernization that installs Communications-Based Train Control, which means sections of the G must be shut down on selected weekends while that work gets done, according to the MTA."
""I have some friends who live in Forest Hills, so that'd be so much more accessible to get to them," one rider told Streetsblog."
More than 30 advocacy groups, business leaders, and neighborhood organizations sent a Feb. 5 letter urging restoration of weekend G service to Forest Hills as a pilot. The coalition argued the extension would be an immediate, relatively low-cost way to improve cross-borough travel and cut transfer times. Ridership and development along the G corridor have surged since the 2010 cutback, adding roughly 50,000 riders. City Hall called the proposal interesting and is reviewing it. The MTA cited Queens Boulevard capacity constraints, weekend construction, and Communications-Based Train Control signal work that requires weekend shutdowns as barriers to a quick restart.
